My research focuses on how doctor communication affects patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes. How we perceive the world, inhabit our bodies, form our thoughts, and relate to others - all interact with culture. My work is based in cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology as they relate to health services. I am a New York City psychiatrist with internationally recognized leadership in cultural psychiatry.
I have helped to create the Cultural Formulation Interview for the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). I have partnered with collaborators around the world to create questions on how clinicians can understand what is most at stake for patients. My research helps medical professionals get to the patient’s perspective.
I bring this patient-centered perspective to my practice. You are the expert on your life: your thoughts, desires, emotions, behaviors, concerns, family, and friends. We will tailor a treatment plan that responds to your individual needs.
I am New York City psychiatrist and New York City therapist who helps people with a range of identity problems: concerns about stigma, discrimination, and prejudice based on age, race, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation.
